Bartlett wildlife control Tip of the Month:

How to keep wild animals out of my garbage cans?
Wild animals can get anywhere. They are very sneaky and can find their way inside any place. This is the reason why you often see wild animals in the strangest places. One such place is your garbage can. Yes, as unlikely as it may seem, wild animals can be found in your garbage cans. The reason for this is the leftovers that may be of no use to you but can be lifesavers for these wild animals. In the hunt for food, they often tumble into your trash can and then get stuck there. It takes a lot of time and effort to get these wild animals out of your garbage can. It requires a lot of hard work which comes along with huge health risks that are just not worth it. Instead, it is better if you look for ways to keep the wild animals out of your garbage cans. This will protect you and make sure you do not have to get the wild animals out by putting yourself in danger. There are a couple of ways you can keep wild animals away from your garbage can. Some of these ways are listed below.

Do not place the can outside
Wild animals can only attack the garbage cans if they are out in the open. What you can try to do is keep the garbage cans inside your house and only take them out when it is trash day. This is a guaranteed way of making sure wild animals do not get stuck inside your garbage can because they would not be there in the first place. Just note down the time the pick-up truck comes and then take out the garbage can in broad daylight an hour or two before.

Do not leave the can open
Additionally, do not leave the can open at all! An open can is an open invitation. Make sure the lid is tightly fixed. Sometimes, wild animals knock over the trash, and leftovers are then spilled all over the ground. To avoid the spillage of garbage, use a bungee cord to make sure the can’s lid does not pop open. You can also place a large heavy rock at the bottom of the can so that it is too heavy to knock over.

Use ammonia
This method has worked for some people while it has not for others so you can give it a try and see if it works for you. You can spray ammonia around the garbage and even on the can. The smell of ammonia is very similar to that of urine. When it is sprayed all over, it irritates and scares the wild animals at the same time. Sometimes the wild animals may mistake it for a predator’s smell and stop coming over because of the threat.

Use motion sensors
Wild animals sneak to look for food in the dark because they do not want to be seen by any human or another animal. If you install a motion sensor, the light will shine onto their eyes which will highlight their presence. No wild animals would want to be discovered. Thinking that someone may be onto them can scare them away. However, after some time they may realize that it is a trick and nothing happens; after this realization, these wild animals can keep on coming back. The best approach is to keep your garbage safe. Do not throw out your garbage until the very last day, keep it clean, and make sure the lid is sealed tightly. You can use ammonia and motion sensors for added benefits.
